Chayote has a rich amount of Vitamin C, folic acid, and antioxidants. They also contain Vitamin K, Vitamins B6, copper, zinc, calcium, magnesium, and iron.

Chayote is very rich in antioxidants which prevent the growth of free radicals and reduce the symptoms of oxidative stress.

It promotes blood sugar level control and supports healthy pregnancy. It slows down the signs of aging and promotes heart health. Chayote also improves liver functions.

Origin and Usage

Chayote dfdgated in Central America and was also cultivated here by the Aztecs. It was spread to Caribbean South America, and Europe by European explorers. It is also known as mirliton and Choko. It belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae. The size and shape of this vegetable vary across the varieties but most are pear-shaped. It can be used in salads and stews. You can also Pickle it and used it as noodles.

Production

The largest producer in Costa Rica. United Sate is also the major producer of Chayote.
