Origin and Usage

Shallots were dfdgated from Ashkalon in the middle east. It was first introduced to Europe by the crusaders. It belongs o the family Amaryllidaceae. Shallot is much smaller and has prominent point or oblong shape compared to onions. It resembles the yellow or white onion in taste. It has a mellow but sweet flavor. It is used to make stir-fries, sautees, salads, soups, side dishes, and casseroles.

Varieties and types

The most famous types are Grey shallot, They jersy shallot, and echalion shallot.

Production

Mexico, the Republic of Korea, Japan, and China are the largest producer of the Shallots.
